Happy Thanksgiving-Week of November 28th

Next Week

Spelling

Here are the words for next week:

Phonics

We are working with the eet word family and the digraph ch.

Guided Reading

We will do more with the book November by Cynthia Rylant. This book contains a lot of metaphors, so we will be discussing what metaphors are.

Math

Full swing into subtraction. We have discussed two strategies to help us solve these kind of operations. Counting up from the smaller number and counting back from the larger number.

Don’t forget to log on the IXL math website for some great math practice.

Conferences

Conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, November 30th from 5:00-7:30 and Thursday, December 1st 12:45-3:15 and 5:00-7:30. There is a half day for students on Thursday. It is important to meet with ALL parents at this time. This is the time to discuss your child’s growth and the expectations for the next quarter so we all have a clear map for the road ahead.

The Week of November 21

Report cards came home today!! Please review it with your child and let them know how proud you are of them. Conferences are scheduled for Wednesday, November 30 and Thursday, December 1st. Make sure to go to the SignUp Genius website to schedule your conference. Please sign and return the envelope as soon as possible.

Next Week

Spelling/Guided Reading

Due to the short week we will not have a spelling list or a guided reading book.

Phonics

We will work a little more with the digraph sh.

Social Studies

We will be discussing Native Americans, Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving. This ties in well with learning about informational text.

Job Day

Don’t forget about Job Day on Tuesday. Students should dress up for the job of their future. Make sure to fill out the Job Day form that should have come home with the note this past week. I can’t wait!!

Week of November 14th

Today marked the end of the first card marking of first grade!! Crazy isn’t it?? We have been busy working to meet this card marking objectives. Report cards will be coming home next Friday.

Spelling

Phonics/Word Work

We will review short a along with the digraph sh.

Reading

Our guided reading book this week is In November by Cynthia Rylant.

When guided reading bags come home, please make sure to follow the large card to help you with questions regarding retelling and making a personal connection. I know sometimes it is hard for kids to make a connection depending on the book. Do the best you can when you can.

Writing

We will be writing a Thank You letter to the Allen Park Rotary. Your first grader brought a book home last Friday that the Rotary donates to all first graders in Allen Park. We are so grateful for their generosity. 🙂

We have also been working hard on personal narratives.

Math

We are moving on to subtraction.

Reminders

  • Please make sure to return Friday Folders every Monday along with the homework packet. They are called Friday Folders because they come home every Friday.
  • Spirit Merchandise orders are due Monday, November 14th.
  • Picture retakes this Thursday, November 17th.

Behavior

We are working hard on making good choices with our behavior. Many students are having trouble keeping their hands and other objects to themselves. Please have a small discussion about what good behavior looks like and being kind to others.

The Week of November 7th

Thank you so much for your emails and cards expressing sympathy for the passing of my dad. Your kind words and hugs from the kids have helped me immensely during this very difficult time.  Thank you for being flexible and understanding.

Spelling

The words for this week are:

where, down, come, funny, little, cub, sub, tub, club, shrub

Make sure to make time to practice the words at home too. This week’s list has some bigger words.

Phonics/Word Work

The word family this week is ub and the short u sound.

Writing

We are continuing to work on using more adjectives in our writing and learning more about nouns.

Math

We took the math test this past week on  chapters 1 and 2. Everyone tried their best and did well. I will assessing how high everyone can count this week. Practice at home is always helpful.

We are also doing some activities with pumpkins. Students will guess the circumference and then measure using various non-standard forms.

Science

We will also use our pumpkin to discuss the scientific process. Make a hypothesis, carry out an experiment (sink or float) and write a conclusion.

Don’t forget Tuesday, November 8th is election day and a 1/2 day of school for students. School will be dismissed at 11:40.
