Week of January 30th-Week 20

Guided Readers

The book for next week is Snow by Cynthia Rylant. This is a great book to help explain figurative language.

L blend words are: slid, plan, blob, clap, flip, glad

Sight words: too, went, saw, ran, eat

Writing

We continue to work hard on informational writing. This week we worked on a penguin piece together. Starting the paper with a topic sentence or a broad statement and then coming up with 3 facts about the topic. Bennie staff is working to use the same blueprint format writing paper across grade levels to have continuity to help all the students to improve their writing skills.

Math

We are working on chapter 2 which is  learning more about subtraction. Some of the kiddos are struggling a little with subtracting zero or subtracting the same number and ending up with zero.

Science

We will do some activities to do with the 3 states of matter.

Have a great weekend!!

Valentine’s Day

If you are beginning to think about Valentine’s Day, we will have a small afternoon celebration on Tuesday, February 14. It is easier if you have your child just sign their name to the Valentine and not address with individual names. This makes passing out the cards faster and easier for the kids. We will have white bags for the kids to decorate to hold their cards. I will be asking for some donations so the class can have a drink and a treat. 🙂

Thank You!! Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy your Friday!!

Week of January 16th-Week 18

Guiding Readers

Our book for the week is Martin’s Big Words by Doreen Rappaport.

Some examples are: ice, face, dice, age, cage, page (check out the video below)

Sight words: say, ate, have, so, did

Math

We will begin chapter 2 which is fluency and strategies within 10.

Writing

We are moving along with more informational writing.

Guided Reading Groups

We are back in the groove with our guided reading groups. I am glad to see the reading logs getting signed and that your child is reading every day. Please remember to practice the monthly Nonsense Word Fluency cards each day if your child is struggling with these. This gives early readers practice with learning letter sounds and basically the sounding out practice they will need to make strong readers.

If your child is reading at a level C, D, E, or F it is good practice to read the book more than once. Reading a book several times gives them some more time with the book and this will hopefully improve their fluency. It will also help them see words over and over again which will help make them stronger.

After reading don’t forget to check for understanding by having your child retell the story. I have them close the book and ask them what happened in the beginning, middle and end of the book.

Social Studies

We are reading  and learning a lot about MLK Jr.. This activity was a great way to show young students that we may be different on the outside, but we are the same on the inside.
