We will learn about the seasons of an apple tree and how apples grow. Our  apples will help us to learn about sorting, making predictions and other good things about apples. Please send an apple with your child by Tuesday, October 2nd. Thank You 🙂

Box Tops
Mrs. Tiffani Martin will be around to pick up our Box Tops for Education labels this week. Please clip, save and send them in. These bring in hundreds of dollars extra for our school.

Mark Your Calendars

Fun times at Lincoln Park Skating Center-Sponsored by the Bennie PTA

Shoe Tying

Please take the time to help your child learn how to tie their shoes. It only takes about 15 minutes. Many students are wearing sneakers and high-top shoes that come undone easily. It is a life skill that should be learned by the beginning of first grade. Thank You for your help!

Reminders

There is a half-day of school for students Friday, October 5th. Dismissal is at 11:30.

Don’t forget we have snack every day at 10:00 and go outside for a break. A light jacket or sweatshirt may be necessary for those cool mornings. 🙂

Next Week

Guided Reading

Here is what we will be covering in reading next week.

Spelling/Word Study

The spelling words for next week will focus on short i. The words for next week are:

if, is, him, rip, fit, pin

Remember to practice the words at home. Typing them on a computer, writing them on a dry erase board, or outside with sidewalk chalk are just a few ways to make learning a little more fun.

High Frequency Words

Remember students need to be able to read these words not spell them on the test. The high frequency words for next week are:

for, he, what, look, have, too

Everyone did great on the spelling test and their high frequency words!! Keep up the great work!!

Math

We are still working with shapes. This past week we discussed 3D or solid shapes. We should be able to move on to making patterns with shapes.

Social Studies

We will finish up our discussion about families.

NWEA-Testing

The testing season has begun. Our class will be testing Wednesday the 26th and Thursday the 27th. Both tests, reading and math, are  administered on the computer and adjusts to your child’s ability. Please make sure that your child gets a good night sleep the night before and has a good breakfast. A little conversation about trying hard and doing your best may go a long way. 🙂

Scholastic Books

A Scholastic book order came home today in your child’s folder. If you would like to order online please use the class code G2GZX. If you want to order the “old fashion” way, please send the order to school by Wednesday, September 26th.

THANK YOU!!

Thank you to those families that have made play-doh and card stock donations to our classroom!! I am so grateful for your generosity!!

Welcome Back to school and to our classroom blog!! Please check back every Friday afternoon for updates for our class. Our first week was AWESOME!! Everyone worked really hard and settled right into our first grade routine!!

Next Week

Guided Reading

The district has adopted a new reading program for all elementary schools in Allen Park. The Journeys curriculum will help to guide our instruction of the necessary reading requirements for each grade level. We are all looking forward to implementing this program and guiding our students toward success.

This week’s unit is titled Back To School. This week will help us transition to our first full week of school and back to learning in the classroom. We will focus on two stories,  Jack’s Talent and Back to School.

Daily 5

This literacy format may be familiar to you from your child’s kindergarten classroom. Next week we will begin to review read to self and   working hard to build our reading stamina.

Word Study

There will not be a spelling list next week but rather a review of some high-frequency words. Please take time to practice these words. The words this week are:

I, to, like, a, see, the, we, go, is, are

Writing

Narrative writing is the focus for the first card marking. Narrative writing is writing about something that has happened to the writer. This is a good place to start for young students.

Math

We will begin our unit on shapes and patterns.

Snack/Recess

We make time for snack every morning around 10:00. Please make sure to send in a healthy snack with your child. We also try to get outside for a brain break around 10:15 so make sure your fabulous first grader has a sweater or jacket when the temperatures are cool.

Thank You

Thank you all so much for sending in the classroom supplies!! It is greatly appreciated!! 🙂

Meet The Teacher

Meet The Teacher is scheduled for this coming Thursday, September 13th at 6:30 p.m. Looking forward to meeting you then!!
