Week of February 28th-Week 23

Week 23 in Room 207

Guided Reading

The story for the week is How to Heal a Broken Wing by Bob Graham.

Word Study/Spelling

Our focus will be the review of long u with the help of magic e. This can be tricky for many first graders because sometimes we hear the long u sound and sometimes it is the /oo/ like in June.

Long u : cute, mule, fume

Long u but the /oo/ : June, rude, tube

Sight words: white, soon, there, pretty, out

Writing

We are continuing to work on our informational writing pieces. Many students are doing well and some kiddos are struggling.By now, students should be able to write 4 to 5 sentences about a topic they know some facts about. Some suggestions have been dogs, cats, turtles, lions, school, super heros, and athletes. Look for a piece coming home this week.

Math

We are working hard with subtraction. We will also be targeting numbers to 20 along with picture and bar graphs.

Bingo for books happens this Friday at Bennie!! Doors open at 6:oo!!

This is a great way to kick off the reading month of March!!

Have a great week!! Spring is only 20 days away!! 🙂

Week of February 21st-Week 22

This Week in Room 207

I hope everyone enjoyed our little break with a bonus day on Friday!!

Guiding Readers

We will not have a new book this week.

Spelling/Word Work

We will continue to work on magic e with long i and long o.

Guided Reading  Groups and Bags

In order for your child to continue to move up in levels, practice at home is essential every day. Reading the book one time is not enough. Reading  the same book multiple times is actually suggested and encouraged. This will help your student to learn the difficult to sound out sight words and become a fluent reader of the text.

The little books that come home in the book bag, are books at your child’s level. There may be some that may be a little more difficult and that is okay. Multiples reads of the book will get them feeling more comfortable and build their confidence.  It is important to read every day for at least 20 minutes outside of our class time.  I have enclosed a reading log for you to complete when you read with your child. You can write multiple books on one line to help conserve some space. Don’t forget to review sight word flashcards and the nonsense word card several times a week. Especially if your child does not know them well.

If you have any questions, just let me know.

Week of February 14th-Week 21

Guiding Readers

The book for this week will be I Ain’t Gonna Paint No More by Karen Beaumont.

Word Study

We are reviewing long i and long o with the help of magic e.

Examples of how magic e changes the short vowel i and o.

fin/fine  dim/dime  pin/pine   kit/kite   rid/ride

rob/robe   hop/hope   mop/mope   cod/code

Sight words: four, must, saw, what, will

Writing

Everyone is trying very hard to organize ideas before beginning to write our informational pieces. We will keep working on this for next week as well.

Math

We are working hard with subtraction. It is important to practice addition and subtraction facts so your child can become faster at solving problems. Even though first grade does not require timed math tests it will be something they will need to be able to do in 2nd grade and beyond.

Science

We will discuss the 3 states of matter and do an experiment about ice and water.

Social Studies

Black History Month is a perfect time to learn about Rosa Parks and Ruby Bridges.

Homework-READING-LANGUAGE ARTS-MATH

As we approach the last few weeks of the second trimester, it is an expectation that you are reading with your child every day. It is  unfortunate when a child comes to the reading table to work they have not read their books.  In some cases, it has been days. It is critical that your child practices reading to strengthen their skills and be prepared for 2nd grade. The guided reading bag has the nonsense words and sight word flashcards that should also be done 2 to 3 times a week. It only takes 20 minutes tops.

The entire class has been doing more practice in order to prepare for our final NWEA assessment at the end of the year. You can help your child too by having them logon to Edmentum by using the link below or going in to our Google Classroom on their chromebooks. There is a section on language arts, reading and math. What is great about Edmentum is the practice is specifically tailored to your child’s performance on the NWEA test.

Below is a direct link for your child to enter their Edmentum account.
