Next Week

The words for next week are:

cool, chew, blue, soon, new, true, blew, tooth, due, pool

Phonics/Word Work

This week we are working with the vowel teams of ew (chew), oo (cool), and ue, (true).

Make extra time to practice these during the week. These vowel teams can be very tricky.

Guided Reading

We will be reading the book The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli.

Reading

Just a reminder to make sure to take time to read the leveled books that come home in your child’s guided reading bag. The next DRA testing is scheduled at the end of the month. Students are expected to be at a DRA level 18. At this level they are timed. This is why fluency is so important. They need to read quickly, yet be able to comprehend what they are reading. During testing they are asked to make a connection to the text or what they think the author’s purpose was for writing the book. This can be difficult for many good readers, because the purpose is not always stated. The reader needs to “read between the lines”  to understand what it is.

Writing

The boys and girls are finishing up their All About Insects book and we will work more with narrative writing this week.

Math

We have started working with Chapter 9 which is measurement.

Science

Our butterflies emerged from their chrysalis and we released them in the cold rain today. It is always a wonderful learning experience.

Field Trip

Don’t forget our field trip is next Friday, May 12th. If you haven’t turned in your permission slip and payment for the ticket and bus, please turn it in by Monday. Thank You 🙂
