First Grade Sight Words
These are the last group of words your first grader will need to know by June. Keeping practicing!!
Writing
We will be learning about some of the text features found in informational text and how we can add them to our own writing.
Don’t forget you can practice writing at home too. Using the spelling words to make sentences is great practice. We will be doing this each week with our spelling list. After several weeks I will ask the students to try it on their own. Many are still having trouble with capitalization and punctuation.
Math
We took our first timed math test yesterday and everyone did very well!! Our goal is to try and complete the 36 problems in 5 minutes. Many of the kiddos were able to get it done. Extra practice at home will make them faster and more accurate.
We are using the counting up strategy. This is when you start at the larger number and then count up from there. For example: 8 + 4 I would say 8 and then count up, putting a finger up until I have 4. 8…9, 10, 11, 12. So my answer is 12.
Here is the focus for chapter 3.
Science
We should be able to wrap up the unit about sound. Today in music Mr. Skebo showed us how several instruments make their sounds. We also read a book that helped us learn that the sounds that we make come from the vibration of our vocal cords.
March is reading month
We will kick off reading month with our first grade Read In next Friday. Keep an eye out for some other fun activities.
Don’t forget next Friday, March 1st is our Read In. It is always a lot of fun!!
Bingo for Books
Bingo for Books is an annual event held at Bennie and hosted by our AWESOME Bennie PTA. All the fun starts next Friday, March 1st at 6:30.
Have a great weekend 🙂
