Week of January 8-Week 17

Next Year-2018

Guiding Readers

Our first story to start off 2018 will be Sneezy The Snowman by Maureen Wright.

Guided Reading Bags

Wednesday or Thursday your child should have brought home their guided reading bag full of books. Most of them are books I selected at their current reading level. They also went book shopping in our classroom library and choose 2 books to come home with them. These books may be easy for them or a little bit more difficult. Either way, they chose them which means they are interested in reading them or sharing with someone.

It is SO important that your child reads over the next 2 weeks. I know some parents think that it is only 2 weeks, but it does make a difference. When your child is at school, we read and write every day. There is constant practice of their learned skills. When there is a break even for a few days the lack of practice is noticeable.

Spelling/Word Work

For this week we will be working with various l blends.

Writing

We will continue to work on  “how to” writings.

Math

We will continue to practice addition and subtraction facts. Please log on to IXL math for practice at home. We will also be doing more with length/measuring and writing and counting numbers to 120.

Daily Calendar

Please make an effort to check your child’s calendar on the back of their Daily Take Home Folder. This is a good way to start a conversation about how their day went and what is going on at school. Please initial each day.

THANK YOU!!

Thank you to everyone for the donations for our class celebration!! The kids had a lot of fun with the various activities. THANK YOU to the parents who came in to help out!! You made it much easier for me!!

Thank you too for all the lovely cards, gifts, and goodies!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

Week of December 18-Week 16

Next Week

Guiding Readers

We will finish up 2017 with The Gingerbread Baby by Jan Brett.

Spelling/Word Work

Don’t forget to practice at home. Some suggestions; writing the words on a dry erase board, typing them on the computer, writing them in shaving cream or sand.

Writing

We are moving on to Unit 3 which is “how to” writing.

Math

We have been doing great with shapes. We will hopefully, wrap them up this week.

Social Studies

We will discuss Needs and Wants and learn a little about Hanukkah and Kwanzaa.

Thank You!!

The Allen Park Rotary came around to all the first grade classrooms in Allen Park this week. They not only shared the reading of the book There Was A Cold Lady who Swallowed Some Snow, but each child took one home!! We are so fortunate to have a caring and giving organization that supports literacy in our community!!

Winter officially arrives this week on Thursday!!  Have a wintery week….

Week Of December 11-Week15

Next Week

Guided Readers

Our story for next week is Snow Is Falling by Franklyn Branley.

Spelling/Word Work

Our list this week begins our work with blends. These words can be tricky for some first graders, so please make time to practice at home too.

Writing

Everyone is moving along with writing. Many of us are continuing to work on capitalizing the first word in a sentence and ending with a period. This is a beginning goal for first grade writers.

We read a book this week titled, Red Rubber Boot Day by Mary Lyn Ray that taught how to draw using different perspectives. Many of the kiddos tried this in their illustrations. Next week we will learn about speech bubbles.

Math

We are finishing up fact families and started working with shapes while mixing in some measuring.

Social Studies

We will be discussing needs and wants. This fits in well at this time of  year.

Report Cards

Our first trimester report card came home today. Please take time to sit down with your child and let them know how proud you are of their hard work. It makes me very happy that everyone is growing and learning so much. 🙂

Please sign and return just the large envelope. The report card is for you to keep.

Other information…

Week Of December 4-Week14

Next Week

Guiding Readers

Our text for next week is, Ordinary Mary’s Extraordinary Deed by Emily Pearson. This is a wonderful story for this time of year.

Spelling/Word Work

Our focus this week will be a review of the digraphs ch, sh, th and wh. Don’t forget to make time to practice the spelling words at home.

Writing

We started our second personal narrative booklet. I have seen a lot of growth since the beginning of the year.

Math

Our main focus are fact families. Fact families start with 3 numbers such as 3, 5, 8. Students should be able to make 2 addition and 2 subtraction problems with the set of numbers. We are also practicing writing and counting from 1 to 120.  I highly suggest logging on to IXL math for extra practice. The usernames and passwords were sent home back in September.

Report Cards

Today was the end of the 1st trimester. Report cards will come home next Friday.

Bennie Gives Back Night

Bennie Gives Back Night is next Friday, December 8th starting at 6:00 p.m.. There will be crafts and other fun things to do. The Warming Tree will also be up so we can start decorating it with hats, gloves, scarves and blankets to be donated to families in our community this winter.

Have a wonderful weekend!! Enjoy the sunshine!! 🙂
