Guiding Readers
Our book for the week will be Sneezy the Snowman by Maureen Wright.
Spelling/Word Study
Our focus will be long u with the help of magic e. This can be tricky for many first graders because sometimes we hear the long u sound and sometimes it is the /oo/ like in June.
Long u : cute, mule, fume Long u but the /oo/ : June, rude, tube
Sight words: into, she, are, but, new
Math
We will start back up with addition and begin some timed tests.
Writing
The focus for this trimester is informational writing.
The Winter Solstice is Tuesday, December 21st. This is the shortest day of the year and the beginning of our winter season. The good news is it will begin to stay light out longer each day. YAY!!
Dates to Remember
No school on Friday, January 14th -Staff professional development day
No school on Monday, January 17th-Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Reminders-READ, READ, READ
Please make time to read over winter break. Being away from our daily routine of reading and working with words can have a negative impact and some students can actually slip back a reading level or two. We want to be ready and pick up where we left off. I briefly met with every group and added some extra books to their reading bags. Don’t forget to practice sight word flashcards and the nonsense word fluency card too.
