Guided Reading Bags

You may have noticed a card in your child’s bag that looks like this. These are nonsense words for the month of November. Research has shown that when students are fluent in their sounds and decoding these CVC (Consonant Vowel Consonant) words it can help with fluency and comprehension.  Please make time to practice 3 to 4 rows a couple times a week. All vowels are short sounds. Let me know if you have any questions.

WHAT IS NONSENSE WORD FLUENCY?
A nonsense word is a word in which the letters make their most common sounds but the word has no commonly
recognized meaning.

Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF) assesses knowledge of basic letter-sound correspondences and the ability to blend letter
sounds into consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) and vowel-consonant (VC) words.

One reason that nonsense words are considered to be a good indicator of the alphabetic principle is that make believe
words have no meaning and reading them demonstrates the student’s ability to apply letter sound  knowledge in decoding. The student cannot guess the word.

The goal is for students to read whole words on NWF. This measure is generally used from the middle of kindergarten
through the beginning of second grade.

Research is very clear that NWF is a primary skill that must be mastered to enable students to become proficient in
reading comprehension.

TIPS FOR PARENTS
Blending Activities
* Touch and Say – Spell a word with letter tiles. Have the child touch each letter and say the sound. After correctly
matching each letter with the sound it represents, the child blends the sound together without stopping. The child then
says the whole word. As he/she becomes more confident, encourage the child to blend the sounds together without
saying the sounds individually. This will skill improves with practice.

Job Day Presentation

Don’t forget our Job Day is Tuesday, November 23rd. Students may come to school dressed in their career clothes. Please don’t forget to fill out the Job Day sheet that came home with your child. It will help them to be prepared when they get up in front of the class to discuss their future profession.

Just another reminder to send a snack with your first grader every day. We do not have snacks available in our classroom and have several food allergies.

Week of November 15th-Week 10

Next Week

Guiding Readers

Our story for next week is  A Turkey for Thanksgiving by Eve Bunting.

Word Study/Sight Words

We will learn about magic e and long a words with the magic e ending. The words this week are:

Long a: came, make, brave, late, gave, shape

Sight words: am, no, yes, was, must

Our sight words are coming from the Primer Dolch word list. These are the orange flashcards that came home this week.

Writing

This is our last week of narrative writing. I am so proud of how much everyone has grown. Writing can be a tough skill to learn especially when we live in a digital world. The more you engage your child in print and writing the more it will all come together.

Math

We finished up chapter 9 about length. We will move to chapter 3 and review number bonds.

Social Studies

We will take some time to discuss Thanksgiving.

Scholastic Book Orders

If you ordered from the October Scholastic book forms that went home, I am so sorry that our order is not here yet. This was the email I received from Scholastic.

We’re working hard to get through our backlog of orders and
hope to get books into your students’ hands soon. In the meantime, please share this message from Judy Newman, President of Scholastic Book Clubs, with your students’ families who are waiting to receive their orders.

Have a great weekend! 🙂

Week of November 8th-Week 9

Guiding Readers

The story for next week is In November by Cynthia Rylant. This book will introduce us to metaphors.

Word Study/Sight Words

We will use this week to review the digraphs, ch, sh, and th. The words this week are:

Digraphs: chop, chip, shut, shin, them, that

Sight words: funny, where, yellow, three

This week is the last of the sight words from the Pre-Primer list (red word) flashcards. Look for the Primer list coming home.

Writing

We did some different writing this past week with our pumpkin sink or float and an all about owl booklet. We will find our way back to narrative writing and work on finishing up this trimester.

Math

We used a pumpkin this week to talk about circumference. We will continue to work on length and number bonds

Reading and Science Connection

Since we were reading a book this week about owls, it was a perfect time to explore and investigate real owl pellets. The kiddos loved it and it was a great connection to our guiding readers text this week.

Social Studies

Part of the first grade social studies is talking about our past, present and future. We will read When I Grow Up to start the conversation about what the kiddos want to be when they grow up.  Look for a fun assignment coming home next week.

Fall Back this Sunday!!
